XBL Silver Allowing Free Online Time?

OK, this is hard to run down exactly, because there's a Live Weekend going on right now, which means you can play online for free on Xbox Live. But reader Draco, a Silver level gamer, says that he's been playing cross-platform multiplayer games for free since Wednesday night, which precedes the Live Weekend (which started at midnight Friday.) I checked his Gamercard and, yeah, he played Shadowrun online on Thursday.

It seems that ending the gold/silver distinction in Games for Windows Live (effectively making it free) might have had the same effect for those who game on titles that are both PC and 360. A commenter on Xbox Live forums found that Shadowrun online play was free, for example. Reader Draco, who spotted this, says it works for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition and Universe at War: Earth Assault, too.

We'll have to check back after the weekend ends. But bigger picture, could this — don't get your hopes up, but it's gotta be on everyone's mind — mean that Xbox Live may eventually convert to a free model for all multiplayer gaming too?

Linked Achievements for Gears of War 2

Gears of War 2 made yet another appearance just recently and was said to be getting linked achievements. What exactly are linked achievements? As simply as its name, linked achievements are things you can get in Gears of War 2 for what you did in the original game. Some excellent examples are these right here.

- Complete Act 1 in GOW, unlock Anthony Carmine in Gears of War 2
- Find 10 COG tags in GOW, unlock Minh Young Kim in Gears of War 2

With this new idea for achievements, it brings the gaming community back to experience the good stuff with the original games. It's like completing Halo 2 on Legendary and getting to be a brute in Halo 3 Campaign. That sounds pretty cool to me. I'm just wondering what other linked achievements there will be for the near future.

Microsoft - Bungie Split?

As we all know, or should know, Microsoft decided to NOT show Bungie's new halo game a week back during E3. In an effort to save valuable E3 time, Microsoft did not let Bungie show their new game, that they ARE developing. Many said that the conference was going to be around 3 hours but ended up being 90 minutes.

Bungie has always been (or at least have appeared) to be concerned about their fan's happiness. Not until after E3 did they realize that they disappointed their fans who were awaiting the Halo news. Of course this caused quite a bit of clatter and chat between Microsoft and Bungie. Well you may say that's odd, why weren't they concerned before E3? When Microsoft informed Bungie that their Halo time got the "boot", they weren't too concerned until they noticed they were not helping the welfare of their fans.

Speaking about fans, Bungie President was quoted saying this about the incident, “Keeping things clean, I certainly didn’t agree with the decision to delay our news until sometime after E3. Bungie is always concerned first and foremost with our fans. Whenever we are prevented from exceeding their positive expectations it is not a laughing matter."

As you can see, Ryan Harold wasn't exactly happy with the decision and the Microsoft-Bungie relationship is not going so swell as of right now. Hopefully things get better soon or there could be some major changes.

There are many of you out there, just trying to get out in the open and have no clue how to do it. Well guess what neither did I till I stop being an idiot and actually started thinking about it. I put together a list of how to get your "digg!" into "dugg"

  39. Talk about Scientology or big controversies, like whether Pres. Bush is right about corn being a messed up banana.
  40. Mention controversial Figures
  41. Make a list (*hint*)
  42. Use a cool profile icon
  43. Let's think, Create a Digg Account!
  44. Digg stories from the upcoming stories section
  45. Digg your friends regularly, not a little bit
  46. Get an idea of how many diggs you normally get and play off of that
  47. Try and comment on stories you think will hit the front page.
  48. Don't submit directly to the general category
  49. Add anyone that diggs your stories as a friend
  50. Create a list of places to scour for stories
  51. Don't post your story until you know you can get those first 20 diggs
  52. It's all a game and the top diggers are gamers!
  53. Keep building your network
  54. Follow and Digg interesting stories
  55. Make Friends with the top posters
Now that you know 55 Ways to get on the Front Page of Digg, what to do next? Get on the Front Page! The last step is to invest as much time trying to get on the front page of Digg as you did reading this post. Enjoy!

Microsoft Disappointment at E3

We all know Microsoft releases the good, great, bad, and even the awful. For example, we all expected to see Microsoft attempt to clear up their name with all the bad Windows games they had released; unfortunately, nothing near that occured.

On most occasions, E3 is an event that keeps everyone busy, but without anytalk about PC's and such, one group was left alone. This year PC gamers did not have anything to take out of E3. Even though some were left out, it was not all bad. On the good side, there were some good previews of the Xbox 360’s attempt to look like Wii, PS3 trying to add Wii like features, and the Wii itself trying to displease the hardcore gaming fan base. Those things aside, many were waiting for the big PC gaming announcement... but it ceased to exist. (Check out my other posts for more on Microsoft copying others.

According to the IGN global director, E3 is the battle of the consoles... at least that is what us fans consider it to be. The time spent on stage is not about what is going to be released it is about how fellow consoles will crush each other in the competition. The PC is rather a software enabled device rather than a major gaming console. Now if it is a gaming console, it would have gotten more time at E3.

The bit of hope that is still out there is that the global director mentioned that 2 weeks before, they had gone to San Francisco and talked about new games, their releases, and so on. This was the only glimpse that Microsoft had not shut down their gaming line for PC's only because Vista users had already made the switch.

"Copying" is Bad According to Sony

Lately, with the release of the new Xbox Dashboard and its new features and talk about the Wii Remote has caused a lot of rumble.

First off, the release of the New Dashboard Update is the next best thing to Halo 3. Secondly, Imitation (Microsoft's strong point) is the second best thing to flattery. Microsoft does great things, but Sony might be good on this point. Microsoft sucks at coming up with things on their own. Here are a few examples of things they have or are going to steal.

  • Wii Remote (Sony is too)
  • Facebook type interfaces
  • Social interfaces
  • Optimize there income with other ideas
Yeah, Microsoft takes a lot of things but think about it. Here are also a few things that have been stolen from them.
  • "Points idea" (Check out my top posts for how to get free Microsoft Points)
Oh wait, thats all there is. Although Microsoft is the leader of the gaming buz, they don't always get that spot because of their own ideas. Sony says copying is not the way they are going after Microsoft claimed their dashboard to be a much fresher approach than their competitors.

If you ask me, Sony is right on this one and that Microsoft needs to make one amazing thing on their own. Unless they feel like copying the PS3's free live idea, I'm all for that!

The New "Halo" or Halo 4?

Many rumors have been traveling all about the web, such as Bungie working on new "Halo" games.
Yeah, I would love to have a new Halo 4 as the next person, but is that what Bungie is aiming for?

Well recent news with a man high enough with Bungie to actually believe him, says the new game is neither Halo 4 nor Halo Wars. I mean, what game sounds cool with a four after it other than Call of Duty. Here is my take. Halo 3 was great but not excellent, it was fantastic but not outstanding, it had pizazz but not enough spice. The game is amazing for sure, but it lacks something. Now what that is... I have no idea... but I know that it's there.

I believe there will be a combination of hardcore gaming (Gears of War), tactical;real-life (Call of Duty 4), and good old... let's pwn some noobz. Here is what I think should be the main focus and what the game needs.

  1. Different Gameplay Style
  2. More Hardcore Gaming
  3. No Tactics, but real-life sort of take on it
  4. More customizable
  5. Better Machinama capable (Theater Transfer?)
  6. Excellent Graphics
  7. Different Camera Take
  8. More Spice
  9. More Games such as Grifball
  10. Better Sounds (not soundtrack)
  11. It should be called "Gears Duty of Halo I"
If you ask me, the game should be coming soon...as in early next year or mid next year. Obviously, it isn't going to be Halo 4, but similar gameplay with a different take on it (could be good or bad, depends)

Be sure to check back for more game reviews and future possibilities to come. After Halo 19, now all Microsoft has to do is offer free Microsoft Points... oh wait... I already know how to get them. Just check out the top posts in the upper right corner of the page for a how-to.

Guitar Hero/Rockband Combination?

At Activision's E3 press conference Tuesday, Guitar Hero director Brian Bright told the crowd that if they already owned guitar controllers and drum controllers from "previous games" on the Xbox 360, they'd work with Guitar Hero World Tour.

What Activision didn't say is how that will actually work, considering that Rock Band drums have four pad inputs and Guitar Hero World Tour has five.

UPDATE: Here's how it'll work. Speaking with Bright after the conference, I found out that the game's five-button drum track, shown above center, will be compressed down to four inputs if a Rock Band drum controller is inserted.

There's also a MIDI jack on the back of the drum kit, Bright said, which will allow gamers to play Guitar Hero with any electronic drum kit by simply plugging it into the controller. You can also hook up a second drum pedal if you want to play two bass drums.

Xbox Focus - New Dashboard, Update, Avatars, Etc...

So far this is what the new dashboard is capable of: (too bad you don't get free microsoft points...but check out my top posts to see how!)

· Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

· Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

· Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

· LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

· Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

· Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

· New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

Such things as your gamercard and standard gaming features are all there, but a lot has been added. LIVE Parties, (group chats, eight frickin' people in one chat!), has been added, something many gamers have been desiring. You can join games with your others in party (your avatar is always prsent), you can share photos, watch movies, television, and much much more as Shane Kim promised. Also, the avatars have been integrated into the certain games, something Nintendo fans have been asking for ages.

Not only that, but a television channel has been added, allowing you to stream television shows and movies (with new, upgraded titles and releases).

Microsoft clearly has reacted to Nintendo's push for the casual gamer, and while this may not be a motion controller, it's not far off. More details to come. Make with it as you want; but this is Microsoft's big thing. They have officially done it, the "new Xbox experience" will not long focus on the hardcore...and it's right around the corner. Goodbye blades, goodbye old dashboard. You've been replaced by the new, and hopefully for Microsoft's sake, revolutionary.

The new Xbox LIVE is scheduled to be released by the end of the year, and may God be kind on all of us.

TechnoFav Train

Start copy

Hi everyone! In the interests of friendship and promoting our blogs, the purpose of this tag train is to add all the blogs on this list to your Technorati favorites list. In return, everyone else will add you to their Technorati favorites list.

Instructions

  1. Go to http://technorati.com/faves/yourblogurl (replace yourblogurl with your Technorati id.)

  2. Add each and every blog URL on this list as a favorite. Don't worry about Tags as it would take too much time. Click "Add".

  3. Then copy everything between and including Start copy and End copy.

  4. Paste it into a new blog post in "Compose" mode so all the links are preserved.

  5. Add your blog's URL to the end of the list. If you intend to submit multiple blogs then put this list on all your blogs please to be fair to everyone else.

  6. Post everything using the title "TechnoFav Train"

  7. Next contact 5 friends who aren't on the list and get them to join. The more the better. I am aiming at 1,000 group members, but I'm confident we can find more than that. My secret goal is 5,000 group members and those of you who know me are aware of my promotional persistence. Can you imagine what that will do to all our

    Technorati rankings?

  8. Leave the URL of your post here as a comment and your blog will be updated on the masterlist.

  9. Once a week, return to the masterlist and copy it over the list on your blog post.

  10. Add the new blog URLs to your favorites. This last step is important because if you don't add new blogs to your favorites list, then those new blogs will end up removing you from their favorites list and then nobody wins.

  11. Finally, increased Technorati ranking to all!

Apple Decides to Sue the Almighty Psystar!

Apple's adventures with Mac clones had at best, mixed results, and Steve Jobs quickly ended the program in 1997 after his return as CEO. While a company named Psystar ignored that memo when it decided to release its own unofficial Mac clones earlier this year, there's no way it's going to miss Apple's latest memo, which came in the form of a just-uncovered lawsuit filed earlier this month.

This past April, Psystar made instant waves by announcing a bargain Mac Clone for $399 that could run Leopard, the latest version of Apple's Mac OS X. Psystar's PC is an upgradeable tower with a respectable amount of features which, at face value, starts $200 lower than Apple's cheapest—and highly unconfigurable—Mac mini at $599. Despite drawbacks like incompatibility with some Apple software updates, a flood of orders brought the company's site down for days at a time.

While Apple's EULA forbids running Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware, that didn't stop them. Even Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak who is no longer with the company said that he "May Get One." Shipments have reportedly remained slow and steady since the initial storm that met the clones' launch. Meanwhile, Apple remained tight-lipped about the issue—until now.

A ZDNet reader tipped the site to the fact that Apple has finally filed suit against Psystar in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The lawsuit accuses Psystar of violating Apples licenses and trademarks, as well as copyright infringement. While the lawsuit comes as no surprise, the fact that Apple waited to file suit until July 3 to sue Psystar is. Strangely enough, a copy of the complaint is not yet available on PACER, although there's no indication that it's under seal.

Reached by phone, Psystar declined to comment to Ars, and attempts to reach the company's CEO have been unsuccessful. Apple has also yet to respond to our requests for comment on the lawsuit. Psystar has not filed its response to Apple's complaint. According to court documents seen by Ars, initial filings are due in October, with a case management conference scheduled for October 22.

Free Microsoft Points and Xbox Live

How would you like to get as many codes for free Microsoft Points as you wanted, or get a new Xbox Live Account? Everything mentioned can be done for FREE! The way you do so is very simple and takes almost no skill, if any, at all. The simple method to earn free Microsoft Points and free Xbox Live Accounts takes only about 30 to 35 minutes to earn your prize.

First things first, you need an account to get started. Head on over to the Rewards Website and sign up for a free account. My number one suggestion after signing up is to create a new yahoo or hotmail email account for the offers. This will get rid of the spam mail and you won't have to worry about it again.

After you’ve got your account set up go the site and sign in. Click on “available offers” then I would suggest that you select “free” offers. Most of these offers are extremely easy to complete. All that is required of you is to enter your email and an address and you will be ready to go. Once you receive 50 points you can get 4,000 free Microsoft Points, or if you only get less (like 20), you can get 1,600 free Microsoft Points. Also with only 6 credits you earn a free one month gold xbox live card (or some free Microsoft Points), and it keeps going up.

Don't worry about offers running out, because I get many over the course of a month. It's enjoyable to be able to fill out a few boxes and receive my free Microsoft Points. You can get many other things on the Rewards Site. You can even get games for your consoles if you decide to save up enough. They are only 59 credits. So simply sign up and start getting free Microsoft Points.

If you sign up for this don’t forget to check out the following post that includes a list of a bunch of offers that only require an email address for you to get your credits. It will get you one step closer (even though there are very few steps) to your free Microsoft Points.

The New Era Rapid Fire Controller!

Well, with all the gamers and games out there today, you wonder how the competitors are getting the advantage. In Halo 2, it went from BxB's to Quad Shots, but where is the advantage now. Three Words, Rapid Fire controllers. I, myself, have recently bought a Rapid Fire controller. I am here to give a one on however many there are, review. These Rapid Fire controllers come equipped with many different thing so I will review each aspect of my (it sounds cool to say this, Limited Edition Spartan Fully Modded Rapid Fire Controller for the Bumper Jumper Layout) The Rapid Fire Controllers were found at Gamermodz.com

Rapid Fire - The rapid fire is my favorite, because in Halo 3 it allows you to hold the your trigger down and the gun will keep firing at the maximum rate the game will allow it to. For example, I can hold the trigger and keep firing my BR while I can concentrate more on my aiming and pwning noobs. Rapid Fire gets a 9.7/10 for me.

Insant Sticky - The Instant Sticky isn't exactly as it sounds. What happens when you press a button is that you melee your opponent, then start backing up while your player will automatically throw a sticky directly at your opponent. It doesn't always stick, so it's more like an instant kill. The melee takes their shield down, then the sticky either sticks or kills them with splash damage. Overall, I give Instant Sticky a 8.97/10

BxB - The BxB is the only working double melee I know that still works for Halo 3. The combination is not very complex but the speed it needs to be done in basicly can't be done by human hands. I love this, because I camp around a corner, wait for my noob, hit him once then half a second later, send him flying. There isn't much to say except for how awesome this is. I give Gamermodz BxB a 9.89/10

Overall the controller should get around a 9.4/10 and I think it is an excellent Rapid Fire controller. I'll admit that the Rapid Fire controller is a bit pricy but it is totally worth it. Now go enjoy your own Rapid Fire controller anytime soon!

"Free Microsoft Points" Sweeping Xbox Live

EDIT: The real way to get free Microsoft Points is to look at the top right of the page for the top posts or you can sign up at this link (the one that says "They"). They don't require any of that info.

Always remember, major companies will never ask for your personal and secure information... and its the fact that some people don't listen that gets them in trouble. In fact, the only true sites that offer free Microsoft Points, are the ones who don't need your "cash" involved info.

A scam, which has been around for a pretty long period of time, promises free Microsoft Points when you log into your .net Passport account. The site doing so and anysite that needs your personal info, is 100% fake and will only lead to a your pockets being emptied.

We know this isn't the first, nor will it be the last, site to attempt to scam you but we hope to echo what you all should already know.

Keep these few things in mind when searching for a way to get free Microsoft Points. (These three things are credited to N4G.com

  1. Microsoft will only give points away during official contests that ALWAYS link directly back to a Microsoft site and those contests are always widely reported on X3F, Joystiq and other gaming sites
  2. Never, no matter what you're promised, log into your account unless on officially sanctioned Xbox sites (Xbox.com, Bungie.net, ForzaMotorsport.net, etc.)
  3. Never give away your user name and password to anyone and remember Microsoft will never ask for this information
  4. Never give away your account details, including credit card information and mailing address
Not that it is a bad thing to search for a way to get free Microsoft Points, but don't get caught in the scams like sites try to pull.

When I think of this I think of my old PSP and wonder if it has capabilities to stand up to some five hour gameplay. It is a possibility if the phone doesn't use UMDs, but should Sony decide to make it backwards compatible with the originial PSP, it's time will be almost cut in half of what it could be if someone also has on the PSP cell phone functionality simultaneously. Is this something you would spend your stash on, because it probably won't be such a cheap investment. Just think about it... an old PSP, combined with a high tech cell phone.... it's like a Cell Station Portable, or as they call it, the Sony Ericsson PSP Phone.
